THE ANDALUSIAN TRAIL: THE ROOTS OF FLAMENCO

  • City Winery Chicago 1200 West Randolph Street Chicago, IL, 60607 United States (map)

Presented by Intercultural Music Production & Las Guitarras de España

Chicago Flamenco Festival Kick Off Concert.

Join world music group Surabhi for the return of: "The Andalusian Trail: Roots of Flamenco." We will be opening the 2017 Chicago Flamenco Festival at the City Winery Chicago. The concert will be a one-evening reprise of our previous sold out shows at the Instituto Cervantes Chicago in October of 2016. Please join us in celebrating the diversity of cultures that make up Chicago and this world.

From Rajasthan to the Middle East to North Africa and across the Mediterranean into Andalusia, musical ideas and instruments were exchanged and have contributed to the foundation of flamenco music. Members of the ensemble Surabhi will present an evening of music featuring the shared cultural history of medieval Andalusia to the present. The performance will include original and traditional repertoire with Spanish guitar, Arabo-Andalusian poetry and music by Ronnie Malley on oud and harmonium, as well as Rajasthani folk dance by Kinnari Vora and flamenco and Mid-Eastern dance by Marisela Tapia. The evening will also feature Saraswathi Ranganathan (veena), Carlo Basile (guitar), Dhananjay Kunte (tabla), Diego Alonso (guitar), Greg Nergaard (bass), and Bob Garrett (percussion).
