Surabhi Ensemble

The mission of the Surabhi Ensemble is to demonstrate the connections between cultures and to teach a positive message of togetherness in creating, performing, and demonstrating new works of music and dance. Members of the group work in many settings such as schools, hospitals, theaters, concert halls, festivals, refugee organizations, neighborhood parks, and cultural centers to bring this positive message of cultural unity and outreach.

For their South Asia Institute debut program, Surabhi Ensemble will offer an informative hands-on demonstration of their instruments and dance lessons starting 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the music and dance program. To further help kids understand the music and cultures being showcased.

Founded by Veena artist Saraswathi Ranganathan, the group has been performing for the past 10 years, delighting audiences with lush rustic soundscapes of flamenco music and Afro rhythms woven into the rich sounds of Indian Classical ragas, Turkish Maqams, embellished with blues and folk melodies. Performances often include both music and dance from the Indian, African, Spanish flamenco traditions. Surabhi Ensemble features an outstanding line-up from Chicago’s music and theater scene.
